Its being reported that in the ever popular town of Playa Del Carmen a ferry has exploded whilst along side the pier. The ferry was traveling from Cozumel, Mexico to the mainland town of Playa.

The explosion aboard the ferry traveling to Playa del Carmen, Mexico, left at least 25 people injured, Mexican officials have said.

The blast took place on the Barcos Caribe ferry, which travels from Playa del Carmen to the island of Cozumel in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo at around 1 p.m., Mexico’s Excelsior newspaper reported.

Twenty Mexicans, three Canadians and two Americans were injured and in good condition, Local Civil Defense director Juan Medina Sosa said.

The victims suffered cuts and were taken to hospitals, officials said.

Rebecca Lahlum, who lives in North Dakota, said she and her family were vacationing in Playa del Carmen and were on the pier when the blast happened.

“Our kids needed some medical attention for minor cuts and glass embedded in their skin,” Lahlum told the Daily News. “But outside of a few stitches and bandages, we are fine.”

Witnesses have said the ferry pulled into the port just three minutes before the explosion. They reportedly heard passengers shouting and screaming.

Rodrigo Apolimar, a firefighter who works nearby, told reports on the scene he believes tourists along with locals were on board.

Videos and photos on social media showed damage along the side of the ferry as passengers walked to safety carrying their belongings.

The Ministry of Public Security of Quintana Roo said on Twitter it was working with authorities to investigate the explosion. They have not said what caused the blast.
